“The Velodrome was built by Joe and Anthony Miele near the site of the present park and recreation building on Park Avenue. It was saucer-shaped track, made completely, made cpmpletely of wood and clad with galvanized sheets on the outside. Built initially for the bicycle racing, each lap was 1/7th of a mile. Opening day was June 4, 1933, with a packed house of 12,000 people and Mayor Reinheimer firing the starting gun.. Races where held every wednesday night and sunday afeternoon. Built in 1933, the Nutley Velodrome was well known among the internatinal racing circuit. At that time, bicycle racing was just at its peak int he United States. Tickets cost 55p. originally but prices were soon lowered to 40p with an additional 10p charge for a program. The track was built without a concrete foundation, fofr it was on top of the old quarry site, which was filled with decomposing trash. This shifting land base made it neccessary for carpenters to litterally lift and shim the track on occasion. When cycle racing started to die out as a spectator sport, the velodrome found new life as track for miniature car races. Several deaths at the track, lack of attendance and local complaints finally ended the Velodrome´s role in Nuttley´s history: after remaining idle for a couple of years, it was dismantled in 1942”
